Academic question.
Do you guys think that having three citations by one author is too many in an eight citation annotated bibliography?

All three citations are from or are of three different books, if that makes any difference.

(And it is hardly my fault that Henry Jenkins is pretty much the be all and end all when it comes to academic writing on media fandom.)

ETA: Speaking of Henry Jenkins, I love this quote from his book Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide: Fans are the most active segment of the media audience, one that refuses to simply accept what they are given, but rather insists on the right to become full participants.

And on a completely unrelated note I'm making myself an The X-files LJ layout when I get home tonight.

I win sociology... literally.
To explain, in sociology we use WebCT discussion forums and one section in the refexive wariting space in which we are asked to write a reflexive response to a topic and try to explain it using sociological concepts and immagination.

Apparently I'm good at this.

…and the winner is ……

For each topic in the Online Collaborative Space, there is a prize of two Hoyts movie tickets for the reflexive writing activity contribution adjudged by the SAC teaching team to demonstrate the most sociological imagination.

TOPIC ONE: THE EPIDEMIC OF MALE YOUTH SUICIDE

THE WINNER : JACQUELINE LAUREN HOPE

“Some thoughts on the increasing rates of suicide amongst young males and suicide in this age group in general:

1) Society has become more fragmented and individuals have become more self-centered. This leads to both the individual feeling as if they have no one to turn to for help and the individual feeling as though no one will care if they are dead anyway. The increasingly self-centered nature of the individual, especially in this age group means that they are less likely to realise and/or acknowledge the impact that their actions will have on others. In the past it is possible that the individual felt more supported by their various social networks and also would have been more likely to assess the impact of their actions before resorting to suicide.

2) Another possibility is that society is becoming more secular. I'm not sure about other religions or even the other branches of Christianity but in Catholicism committing suicide is a mortal sin, one for which you will go to hell. In the past when societies had a more Religious grounding it is possible that suicide was less likely to be committed due to a fear of that possibility.

3) Lastly a friend and I were talking about the effects of the so-called quarter life crisis. A relatively new term used to describe the difficulties associated with the process of transitioning from adolescence to adult life. It is possible that number of factors including but not limited to: lack of affordable housing, lack of satisfying career options for school leavers and even some university graduates, confusion about sexual and romantic relationships and a loss of contact with friends from high school and university could be impacting upon suicide rates.”

ETA: I totally realise that paragraph two is the most simplistic explanation of mortal sin ever but even though I went to Catholic school for seven years I'm an Atheist and was raised in an Agnostic household so that is about the extent of my knowledge about mortal sin so I apologise if I offend anyone or something.

Son of edit: reflexive writing is basically stream-of-conciseness hence the lack of polish and structure.

HEE!
I just used the university wireless network to download season three of Once and Again in its entirety.

Good thing it got something done because I haven't written so much as a single word of either of the annotated bibliographies I'm supposed to be writing.

Or come up with titles/theses for the two term papers I'm doing the annotated bibliographies for. At least I know what I'm writing about; the one for Press and Society is on sports journalism in Australia and wether current sports journalism practices are still relevant in Australia and the other for New Media and Society is on the way women participate in fandom with a case study on Sports Night fandom.

I do have three hours to annotate the two books (which I have read) I have to return though so time is still on my side.

Also, totally unrelated but in need of pointing out: XF2 TRAILER!!!

I'll be babbling about it as soon as I'm done here, so probably sometime early tomorrow morning by the time I get home.

Sports Night Fans, I Want You!
(Copied directly from my post at [info]sportsnight, hence the formality.)

Hi, I'm Jacqueline. I'm a media studies major at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. This semester I am completeing a subject called New Media and Society and for my term paper I have decided to examine Sports Night fandom.

In early April I will be performing some qualitative research the form of which I have yet to decide, possibilities include, voice interviews over Skype, interviews over an IM service, surveys through [info]snresearchreg or emailed surveys (this will largely depend on your preferences) the questions will include:

~ Basic demographic information (age, sex, location etc.)
~ How long have you been involved in Sports Night fandom?
~ How do you participate in Sports Night fandom?
~ Has the way you praticipate in fandom changed over time?
~ Why do you participate in fandom?
~ Are you involved in other fandoms?
~ What are the differences between the way you participate in Sports Night fandom and other fandoms in which you are involved?

What I need now is for you to express your interest in participating by filling in the sign-up sheet at [info]snresearchreg, a community I have devoted to this project. Please watch the community if you want to recieve updates as to what is happening with my paper and to eventually read the finished product.

By filling out this form you are in no way obligated to participate in my research, it is simply an indication that you may be interested in helping out with my paper.

Thankyou
Jacqueline H.

If any of you guys could sign up that would be awesome, also do you have any ideas as to where else I can post this? I want to reach as many people as possible.

I'm done with exams! WOOT!

I'm not done with semester though, but I getting there and I get to spend the afternoon writing an essay about Julianne Moore, I do love cinema studies for that.

ETA: [info]sportsnightnut, I got someone at uni to proof my essay for me and I just handed it in, thanks for the offer though!:-)
